Today is my dad’s birthday. He is 62 today. My dad is a crabby, cantankerous old man. He has told me he loves me only twice, on my wedding day and the day before his open heart surgery. He is stubborn. He complains constantly about us nine children. According to him, we are bleeding him dry.
But he would give any one of us children anything we needed. He has helped us buy cars, fixed those cars when they broke down, made repairs on our homes and done numerous other things to help us out. He is one of those old types who shows love not by words but with actions.
I love him and I’m so grateful for everything he’s done for me.
Today my dad had his bypass surgery. It went well and the doctor even said his heart looked very strong. I was at the hospital when he was starting to come out of anesthesia. He looked so weak and sick though. It was a little scary. The nurse in the cardiac intensive care unit was very nice and took time to answer my questions even though they were crazy busy because there was a fire somewhere in the hospital and were running on the backup generator. Really sweet of her.
My sister was there at 5:30 am and stayed the whole day. She also brought her daughter who turns one in two weeks. I don’t care if she’s well behaved. Why would you bring a baby that young to sit in the waiting room for ten hours? She then took her back into the ICU room that my dad was recovering in. I’m sorry but babies and small children just don’t belong there. Yes she was well-behaved but she still didn’t belong there. Does anyone else agree?
I know I planned to put up some new posts but my life just got crazy. I took some overnight shifts for work which I find tiring enough.
Then Friday, my dad was hospitalized and had a triple bypass done this morning. It scared the crap out me. I know he’ll most likely be fine but you don’t expect to face your parents’ mortality when you’re only thirty-one. So I’ve been worrying and not getting enough sleep.
Just thought I’d update y’all before I lay down for a nap.
Update: I wrote this when he was just supposed to be going into surgery. I didn’t know they decided to postpone it until Thursday so that his edema (swelling) would go down. So tomorrow’s the big day.
